Splash Dolphin

Splash Dolphin depicts a juvenile, female, bottlenose dolphin named Roxy. The sculpture measures five feet and seven inches from the tip of the rostrom (the mouth or snout) to the tip of the flukes (tail). The entire composition is mounted on a block of stone. Visbal sculpted the dolphin smaller than actual size, poolside, at Marineland near St. Augustine, Florida. She participated in a series of dolphin encounters designed to allow the artist to feel the undulation of the mammal’s form for maximum accuracy. The tactile encounters were mandatory as the dolphin was afraid of the sculptor’s calipers and measuring tape, so traditional measurements could not be taken.
