Sirena

The first sculpture created for bronze by the Artist, Sirena is graceful yet strong. Face and tail stretch toward the warmth of the sun in a much needed respite from the cold depths of the ocean. The first tale of a mermaid occurred in Assyria and dates to around the year 1000 BC. The maid’s name was Atargatis, the goddess mother of an Assyrian queen named Semiramis. Atargatis loved a shepherd but, her loved killed the mortal. The goddess jumped into a lake to hide her great shame and intended to take the form of a fish but, her beauty prevailed and could not be hidden. Thereafter, human above the waist and fish below, she became a mermaid. The Greeks recognized Atargatis under the name Derketo.
