Into the Tide depicts the hippocampus erectus species of seahorse with a flat top bristle brush and sea lettuce. Threatened largely because of an increase in their use for traditional Chinese medicine, an estimated 20 million seahorses are taken from the wild each year and numbers have dropped 70% in the recent past. This romantic fish mates for life, the male carrying the young in a large pouch and giving birth to as many as 300 seahorses at once. Seahorses are poor swimmers, generally moving up and down, relying on the tide to move them back and forth and anchoring themselves with their long, curling tails. Hence, the name Into the Tide.
