Double depicts two brothers engaged in a game of baseball. Is the batter safe or, is he out? It is left to the viewer’s interpretation. A favorite American past time, Colonial Williamsburg researchers have found that baseball evolved from a variety of bat and ball games played by early English colonists. In particular, Colonial Trap Ball involved the batter hitting a wooden trap with a bat and then hitting the leather ball that was projected into the air. The outstretched arms of the boys create an interesting negative space and serve to complete the triangular composition, leading the viewer’s eye in full circle.
